Author Interview: Carolyn MacCullough

Today, I am happy to welcome Carolyn MacCullough, the author of Once a Witch. She was kind enough to answer some of my questions.

____________________

How long have you been writing?

Since I was about eight. I wrote mainly poetry then–very, very bad poetry.

Can you tell us a little about your book?

Once a Witch is about a 17 year old girl, Tamsin Greene, who comes from a long line of witches. Yet she herself has no magical power…or so she thinks…

How did you come up with the concept for Once a Witch?

I was running through Brooklyn one day and in an effort to distract myself from the agony and horror of exercise (I'm not a runner, I've since decided) I started studying all the beautiful townhouses. There was one house with a little gargoyle statue on it and I used to wonder what kinds of stories he could tell if he could talk. Then I thought about how a character who had the ability to make inanimate objects talk. And then I thought about a character who had no magical ability whatsoever, but who was born into a family where everyone was talented. What would she be like? That's how I started hearing Tamsin's voice.

Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

Rowena, the older sister. She's just so perfectly nasty that she's fun!

Are you currently working on any new projects?

I am working on the sequel to Once a Witch. It's called Always a Witch and it contains more talents, time travel, spywork, and of course, some romance!

Do you have an advice for would-be authors out there?

I teach creative writing and I always tell my students to read as much as possible–it will make you a better writer. And of course to write–every day, keep a journal where you record your observations, thoughts, whatever really–that's how you build the practice of writing and learn the discipline and patience that you need for this kind of career.

Is there anything else you would like your readers to know about your or your fabulous novel?

Come visit me at the new website: www.onceawitch.com. Oh and mint chocolate chip is my current favorite flavor of ice cream.

Thank you so much Carolyn for taking the time to answer my questions.

Be sure to check out her new website for Once a Witch which is filled with wonderful treats! Once A Witch hits bookstore shelves on September 14th, so make sure you pick up a copy.
