Series: The Naturals #1
Published by Disney Electronic Content on November 5th 2013
Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But, it's not a skill that she's ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they've begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.
What Cassie doesn't realize is that there's more at risk than a few unsolved homicides—especially when she's sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own.
Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms close. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive. Think The Mentalist meets Pretty Little Liars—Jennifer Lynn-Barnes' The Naturals is a gripping psychological thriller with killer appeal, a to-die-for romance, and the bones of a gritty and compelling new series.
The Naturals is about a group of teenagers who have natural abilities, ones that help them hunt down serial killers. Cassie’s own mother was murdered but her body never found. So Cassie jumps at the chance to be apart of a group that gets to help the FBI catch these killers. What Cassie didn’t expect is a number of things, like being distracted by two boys who are trying to catch her attention and a murder so alike to her mother’s, she knows it must be the same killer.
Seeing as I’ve read Barnes’ books before, I wasn’t expecting what The Naturals held, I thought there would be more supernatural elements, but it’s straight up natural ability and a thrilling read. I downloaded the audio version from my library, although I have an e-ARC of the book from Netgalley as well. I found myself completely engulfed in the story, the narration was excellent and the story even better. I spent late nights at my job working on menial tasks and often did not want to leave so I could finish this book.
Cassie is a very determined girl and does not like the distraction that Michael and Dean bring to her plate when she is trying to find her mother’s killer. There’s a lot of depth to the story and I loved the way the different characters were built with their own flaws and dark secrets. I couldn’t decide who I’d rather Cassie end up with and that tells a lot about how well the characters really came to life. I could see the downsides and positives to each of the boys. Dean seems more of the “nice” guy, until his own secret and ability is revealed. Michael seems the obvious choice, the somewhat snarky yet always there for her type character, even though he’s the “bad” boy.
Beyond that are the other two girls in the program. I loved both of them for different reasons. Lia is a huge liar, but can detect lies herself. I love the role she plays in this book and how moody she is. Sloane is full of information and will spout it out whenever, whether the situation is appropriate or not. It makes for some tension breakers and I just love her character. Also, I really didn’t see the twist at the end coming at all. It was a complete shocker and I cannot wait to see what this series has to hold.
The Naturals is a thrilling read, one that will have your head spinning from beginning to end, the start to a series you won’t want to miss!
