It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self.

To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up. As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live.

But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life—and death—inside.

When everything is gone, what do you hold on to?

Zombie books are a little bit of a risk for me. I will admit, I am a chicken. No scary books for me before bed. But despite my worries, This Is Not a Test sounded promising enough that I just had to give it a try… during daylight hours.
While most zombie theme book focus on characters who will do whatever it takes to survive, Sloane, our MC, goes in the opposite direction. Having lost all family and hope, Sloane just waits for the end. Life for her holds no meaning, and with no meaning, no willpower. Despite this making Sloane a very difficult character to relate to, I applaud Summers for going in this direction. If the world was to end tomorrow, I doubt ever single person is going to fight until the very end. And while I wanted to shake Sloane a number of times, I can respect her reactions to the harshness of her new surroundings, her new world.
This Is Not a Test is not meant to be a happy-go-lucky type of read. It is the zombie apocalypse after all. In its own way, take makes This Is Not a Test a read that may not be for everyone. But for those of you who love their zombie books hardcore This Is Not a Test may be perfect for you. The tale is full of action packed goodness. Just the right amount of creepy and gore. With just enough suspension to make me glad that I did not let my fears get in the way of enjoying this one.
Final Verdict:
This Is Not a Test was a different type of zombie book. Nice suspenseful build up. Good pacing. But with a main character that was a bit difficult to like, This Is Not a Test did not exactly strike a cord with me like I was wanting. However, the differences from the other zombie books out there, does make This Is Not a Test stand out for the right reasons. All in all, I am really torn with this one. Some aspects, I really like. Some not so much.

  1. This Is Not a Test sounds like something I would enjoy. I don’t mind a little darkness with my books, and even though I’m a chicken like you (I can’t watch Supernatural once the sun goes down – brrr) it usually doesn’t bother me that much in books.

    Great review (:

  2. I recently won a copy haven’t received it yet but I love zombie anything so I am excited to see how this character is portrayed!
