In two days the race for the Sea Throne will be over - but all the rules have changed. The sea witch, Nieve, has kidnapped Layla and is raising an army of mutant sea creatures to overthrow the crown. Kurt, the one person Tristan could depend on in the battle for the Sea King's throne has betrayed him. Now Kurt wants the throne for himself. Tristan has the Scepter of the Earth, but it's not enough. He'll have to travel to the mysterious, lost Isle of Tears and unleash the magic that first created the King's powerful scepter. It's a brutal race to the finish, and there can only be one winner.

thoughtPicking up where The Savage Blue left off, The Vast and Brutal Sea was a non-stop race to the finish. Making new friends. Beating the bad guys. A battle for the throne.

Time is running out for Tristan and his friends. Nieve is closing in. She has two pieces of the trident with Kurt on her side. And to make matters worse, she has Layla. However, Tristan has a secret weapon. One that Nieve would never expect. Or at least he hopes he does. The Sleeping Giants. Ancient creatures that once had a powerful connection with the rulers of the Sea. If only Tristan can locate them and set them free.

As part of his mission this time around, Tristan must venture to the Isle of Tears. Of all the places the gang has visited, I think that Isle of Tears is probably my favorite. Looks can be deceiving and there is plenty of hidden secrets on this Isle. Plus, the River clan. I am still not sure how I feel about them overall, but this adventure sure was a lot of fun.

The only downside to this finale was the ending. While it is perfect and suits the book 100%, in a way, I wish it had been more drawn out. Everything comes together so quickly. I am pretty sure, if you have been reading the series, you have a good guess about how the ending will work out. You are probably a little right, a little wrong. The Vast and Brutal Sea does tie everything up nicely, but not in the way I was expecting. Which, most definitely, is a plus.

The Vast and Brutal Sea was everything I had hoped it would be. Fast paced. Great action. Friendships that can last through anything. There is something about this series that calls to me. I adore it.

Verdict:

Great ending to a great series. Very pleased with how it all turns out.
