An exquisite second novel from the Newbery Honor author of RULES! TOUCH BLUE, sure as certain, will touch your heart.

The state of Maine plans to shut down her island’s schoolhouse, which would force Tess’s family to move to the mainland--and Tess to leave the only home she has ever known. Fortunately, the islanders have a plan too: increase the numbers of students by having several families take in foster children. So now Tess and her family are taking a chance on Aaron, a thirteen-year-old trumpet player who has been bounced from home to home. And Tess needs a plan of her own--and all the luck she can muster. Will Tess’s wish come true or will her luck run out?

Newbery Honor author Cynthia Lord offers a warm-hearted, humorous, and thoughtful look at what it means to belong--and how lucky we feel when we do. Touch Blue, sure as certain, will touch your heart.

Short & Sweet: Tess’s small island off the coast of Maine may have to shut down her small school because they do not have enough students attending. Her mother is the only teacher who works there, which means if it does shut down, they would have to move so her mother could work on the mainland. So the island decides that a couple of families will take in foster children to get the numbers back up, and Tess’s family is taking in a boy named Aaron, who is 13, red-haired, plays the trumpet and isn’t as easy to get along with as she had hoped. Touch Blue is beautifully written story about welcoming someone new into a family and finding out what family really means. The author’s writing shows Tess’s dilemma between not wanting to move to the mainland and doing what is right for Aaron’s happiness and sense of belonging.

Final Verdict:  Cynthia Lord does a fantastic job of spinning a story with real life elements and struggles that really move the reader.
