Graphic Novel Review: Jane The Fox and Me

Jane the Fox and Me is the story of a girl named Helene, who is a victim of the mean girls at her school. The only solace she has is in a book, a copy of Jane Eyre where the impossible turns into possible. Helene feels that she is ugly and fat and the girls at school only make it worse by leaving notes in bathroom stalls about her weight and being mean to her. The real conflict begins on a school camping trip, which she has to pick out a bathing suit for and cannot simply ignore her classmates’ […]

Graphic Novel Review: Deadman Wonderland Volume 1

Deadman Wonderland is a new series that I cannot wait to read more.  Set in Tokyo, Ganta is just your normal middle school student until a red man appears and kills everyone in his class. He is accused of mass murder, put on death row and sent to Deadman Wonderland, a prison that also acts as a television show. Ganta must survive by following the rules, participating in deadly games and finding allies. I love dangerous horrible manga I guess, because this is exactly that. Lots of death, violence, and paranormal phenomenon. I loved the graphics and the different angles […]

Graphic Novel Review: Maddy Kettle The Adventure of the Thimblewitch

Maddy Kettle comes from a family that owns a bookstore. Unfortunately, the Thimblewitch has turned them into kangaroo rats and she sets off to find a way to turn them back. Joined by her pet Toad and with the help of some balloonists, she travels on her adventure to find the Thimblewitch. What I love most is that this book takes unexpected turns and reveals truths about characters who were thought evil to be much different than expected. The illustrations are magnificent and I hope there will be more adventures to come. I will definitely be collecting these as they […]

Graphic Novel Review: The Graveyard Book Volumes 1 & 2

The Graveyard Book translates brilliantly into graphic novel format. Perhaps because the author is also a graphic novelist? I read The Graveyard Book several years ago, after it became a Newbery winner. I loved the story and the characters and so when I heard they had redone it in graphic novel format, I could not wait. The illustrations are perfect, setting a dark and dreary landscape in the graveyard and I love the character designs. More realistic and sharp than most graphic novels made for younger readers, I loved the different characters and revisiting the plot in this type of […]

Graphic Novel Review: El Deafo

El Deafo is one of the best graphic novels I have read this year. This is a story based on the life of the author, Cece Bell, who grew up having to use a Sonic Ear to help her hear in school. There is a lot of humor in this book, along with many serious moments and a struggle to find a real friend. I cannot help but love Cece, who has her own moments where she is in the wrong. I think it will inspire kids to realize that even those other kids may seem different, they are just […]

Graphic Novel Review: Hilda and the Black Hound

Hilda and the Black Hound was one of the prettiest graphic novels I have opened in a while. I think I petted for a long time (and smelled it) before cracking it open. I love Hilda’s character design and I will have to hunt down the other books in this series to learn more about her. I like that this graphic novel can stand on its own. I haven’t read any of the other Hilda books, but I fell into the story just fine. One of the most charming parts of the book were the Nisses and their characteristics and […]

Graphic Novel Review: Sisters

Sisters is another autobiographical story by Raina Telgemeier, in which Raina takes a road trip with her mom and younger siblings. The story mostly follows the two sisters and how they have a lot in common but rarely get along. I love Raina’s illustrations in the book and her story is one that reminds me of my own sister and our road trips when we were younger. We never got along and really didn’t settle our differences until we were adults. Since I was more of the Amara character, I felt like this book gave me an insight into how […]

Graphic Novel Review: In Real Life

In Real Life is a gorgeously drawn graphic novel. Jen Wang does a fantastic job and I loved that they made Anda a bit overweight in her character design. I loved Anda as a character, she’s a teen who wants to belong and finds an gaming group of girls that makes her feel pretty awesome. The only problem is that this group is dedicated to getting rid of farming characters. It’s bad for the game, but when Anda gets to know one of the farmer’s, she realizes that these people are doing it for a job and in unfair circumstances. […]
