Manga Review: Bakuman

Manga Review: Bakuman

Finding the manga series Bakuman was written by the same team that wrote Death Note made me jump for joy. I started the series over a year ago, patiently waiting as the last volumes came out, too slowly for my own liking. I promised I wouldn't review the series until it was all over and I finished the last volume #20 and had to stew on it. Unlike their previous work, Bakuman is a realistic story about a pair of boys who decide they want to team up to be a manga team. Mashiro is inspired by his uncle's own […]

Manga Review: Amazing Agent..

Manga Review: Amazing Agent Luna Omnibus I

Amazing Agent Luna was a book I had to pick up after reading Amazing Agent Jennifer. I was looking forward to seeing Jennifer aka Control as a grown adult and her interactions with Luna, a special agent born in a lab and raised to be a top secret agent. As you would think, she is rather naive when sent into the real world, not knowing what friendship or other relationships truly mean. When her latest mission brings her to become a normal high school student, we see Jennifer in the role of her mother and starting to fit into that […]

Manga Review: Durarara Volu..

Manga Review: Durarara Volume 4

The fourth and last volume of Durarara was a bit of a wrap up. It felt a little rushed and honestly I felt like it could have been a longer series. I really would love to see if Celty is ever reunited with her head and what happens with the rest of the characters. I know that there is already a spinoff series that I will have to look into, but it doesn't seem to involve Celty, who is by far the most fascinating character of the series. This volume was a bit of a cop-out, with limited action, some […]

Manga Review: Durarara!! Vo..

Manga Review: Durarara!! Vol. 3

I'm really enjoying this series. The characters are interesting, as are their stories and the reasons that move them forward. Without revealing too much, I have to say the end of this volume shocked me. I definitely did not see that coming and will be reading the last volume soon to see what happens next. Possibly the only problem I have is that all the other characters seem more… interesting than Mikado, who is supposed to be our main character. The twist helps a little with this but I'll have to see what the last volume brings. A lot of […]

Manga Review: Durarara!! Vo..

Manga Review: Durarara!! Volume 2

I love manga series like Durarara, which reminds me a bit of Death Note in subtle ways. First are the over the top characters that I couldn't help but enjoy learning more about. Especially interesting is the plot of the headless rider that seems to be pulling all of these characters together. The reveal in this volume really made me want more. Which is painful, because I have been forcing myself to review each book before starting the next (something I don't always do). Just to keep things straight since it seems like a manga that will reveal a bit of the puzzle each […]

Manga Review: Durarara!! Volume 1

Starting a new manga series always excited me, but then I realize how confusing first volumes often are. I had a hint of it before starting Durarara!! Vol. 1, because of the various characters in one city. The main character Mikado is a young boy who just moved to Ikebukuro and is reunited with his elementary school friend, but his friend seems to be wrapped up in some interesting characters.  There's a legend of a headless motorcycle rider, whom Mikado has a close encounter with. I though this first volume was a great set up to some more complex story […]

Manga Review: Gate 7 Volume..

Manga Review: Gate 7 Volume 2

Gate 7 is a series I most likely am giving up on. I usually like Clamp's graphic novels and I really enjoyed the first volume and thought I would get used to the names and references more quickly than I am. Here's the problem, there is a lot of references to Japan's history in this series. There are countless notes at the end of each volume explaining every name in history among other things.  I like the story line, but with the large tie to history and the lack of background knowledge in the time period where all these characters […]

Manga Review: Gate 7 Volume 1

Gate 7 is a series that excited me since I found out that Clamp was writing it. The first in a new fantasy manga series, the main character is a visiting tourist named Chikahito who finds himself transported with three strangers into what looks to be another world. Unsure of why he has traveled with them, they decide to erase him memories, only to be unable to.  Hana is a strange young girl who seems to taken a liking to Chikahito and even gives him a kiss before he leaves to return home from Kyoto. Months later Chikahito finds himself going to school […]
