Graphic Novel Review: Paper Girls Vol. 1

Paper Girls Vol. 1 puts us in the 1980s, from the viewpoint of a group of girls that deliver papers. It’s Halloween night and all the weirdos are out, but so are they – doing their job of delivering papers. Only something weird happens, the group splits in two with walkie-talkies and one gets jumped and their walkie-talkie taken. They track the guys to a house and into a basement that has something out of this world in the basement, covered by a sheet. What happens next is just nutty. I’m not really sure what’s going on and I kind […]

Graphic Novel Review: We Stand on Guard Volume 1

We Stand on Guard is as unique as Brian’s other graphic novels. Taking place in the future, where Canada and the US are engaged in war, a band of rebels decide to stand against them. Amber is our main character and I just love her right away. There’s a bit of backstory, lots of action and violence right off the bat and some politics thrown in. I love the visuals and the plot and all of the characters already. I just am kicking myself for starting this series right when it came out. I usually push through graphic novels rather […]

Graphic Novel Review: Monstress, Volume 1: Awakening

Monstress blew me away. I love graphic novels and read quite a few of them each month, but by far my mind is still stuck in the world of Monstress. The graphics and storytelling in this graphic novel are phenomenal. It throws you right into the story of a girl who is being sold into slavery but you can tell she is there for a reason. The world is vicious and dark and mayhem quickly ensues, with fighting and gruesome deaths. The world is rich with darkness and I’m not even sure our main character is even in the right […]

Graphic Novel Review: Iron West

As a fan of Doug TenNapel, I cannot resist looking for more graphic novels by him and found Iron West at the library one day. I often do not know what to expect with his work as it takes on a life of its own quickly. Iron West combines living machines with the Wild West in a crazy fun adventure that also involves Bigfoot and a giant train monster. For once, this one is also a little less appropriate for kids, with a couple of more naughtiness, but still full of adventure. I'd say most middle school and high school students […]

Graphic Novel Review: The New Brighton Archeological Society

The New Brighton Archeological Society is a really fun and interesting read for younger teens. When I first opened this graphic novel, the first thing that I did was take in the illustrations. They are beautifully done. I loved how the illustrations are full of contrasts. There are lights… there are darks, and it all seems to fit in with the tone that the novel is currently undergoing. The story itself within The New Brighton Archeological Society was fantastic. It is a mixture of mythical creatures and adventure that kept me turning the pages waiting for more. As for the […]

Graphic Novel Review: The New Brighton Archeological Society

I am just simply in love with graphic novels and when I saw the cover of this one, I knew I had to read it. The illustrations on the cover alone are fantastic and I loved the subject of this graphic novel. It's a fun-filled plot full of discovery, adventure and some really cool magical aspects. It has it's good versus evil underlying plot and I love the connection between their parents and what they are doing. Definitely a series my students would enjoy! Graphically I just love the way the characters look. They have the big heads but otherwise […]
