Book Review: Hemlock

Book Review: Hemlock

I vaguely remember Hemlock was to have a paranormal element… and before I started reading, I could not even begin to guess what it would be. But with that lovely cover, I was willing to give whatever it turned out to be a try. Werewolves! Of all the ideas floating around my head as to what secrets Hemlock could be holding… this was not even on the list. Hemlock starts with a bang. Mackenzie, aka Mac, our MC, has just lost her best friend to of all things a werewolf. In Mac's small town, unfortunately, a werewolf attack is not an […]

Book Review: Falcon Quinn and the Black Mirror

I'm not quite sure where I found out about this series, but I remember it being reviewed as the "next Harry Potter", something that struck me because I had had several students last year ask me what to read that was like Harry Potter. So I had to give this first book a try to see what it was all about.   To be honest, it was quite how Harry Potter started, well sort of. Three students get whisked away on a magical bus to a magical school. Ah, but this is a school for monsters. All students have come […]

Book Review: Teenage Mermaid

This is one of those books that I just stumbled upon at my local library. Schreiber is an author that I have been meaning to read, but with my TBR pile at least a mile long, her books have a bad tendency to get constantly pushed back in the pile. However, I was feeling I was in the mood for a fairy tale so I finally decided to give this book a try. Teenage Mermaid is pretty much what I thought it would be. The plot focuses on Waterlilly (the mermaid) and Spencer (the Earthee) who happen to meet […]

Book Review: Divergent

Book Review: Divergent

Ever since I caught a glimpse of the cover and summary for Divergent, I have been dying to get my hands on a copy. Not too sure what to expect, I went into this novel pretty blind, just hoping that it would live up to all the hype that I had been hearing. Divergent focuses on Beatrice's world where there are five fractions. Each fraction representing a part of the whole: Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peacekeeping), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery), and Erudite (intelligence). For Beatrice, her life as Abnegation is nothing but black and white. So when she gets the […]

Book Review: Illegal

Book Review: Illegal

Nora's father stops sending money back to Mexico for her family, so her mother and her leave their grandmother behind to search for him. Nora learns that America is much different form her small town in Mexico. They luck out and find a couple who let them work for them. Only there is no sign of Nora's father. What has happened to him? A heart-wrenching plot that made me cry and also a quick read. Definitely a great debut about those who cross the wire. I fell in love with Nora. She was strong for a teenage girl and […]
