The Monster Report

report

Welcome to another edition of the Monster Report. The Monster Report explores the book happenings of Jessica and Kristen. Whether it be what we got in our mailboxes, what books we are currently hiding in, or fun stuff to look forward to this week at The Book Monsters, you can find it here. The Monster Report is inspired by Alea‘s This Week in Books, Tynga’s Stacking the Shelves, and Kathryn at the Book Date‘s It’s Monday, What are you Reading? Also, Teach Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers also host a kidlit version of It’s Monday, What are you Reading?

Sorry we didn’t put one up last week guys we both got incredibly busy so this is a report for the last two weeks.

Books added to TBR: None

Read this Week:

With the Fire on High was phenomenal, I loved everything about it, the characters, the plot, and of course the food. 5/5. Spellslinger was pretty good and of course hilarious but it definitely didn’t measure up to the Greatcoats series by him. 4.5/5. Spin the Dawn was incredibly fun to read, I really loved the adventure aspect of it and I was surprised that I actually enjoyed a Mulan retelling for once. 4.5/5. I gave Again but Better 1/5 stars, review coming soon.

The Selection Stories: The Queen & The Favorite (The Selection, #0.4, 2.6)  Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass The Coyote Road: Trickster Tales Watched DEV1AT3 (Lifelike, #2)

Wow, for back to school week.. I certainly read a lot. Most were audiobooks cause I was working a lot on unpacking boxes. So we’ll start with my audios, I read 6 of the books on audio – Down Among the Sticks and Bones was so creepy and wonderful, I like that the books in this series are connected but follow different characters/stories. This one is Jack and Jill but with Frankenstein and Dracula type stories. Treasure Island was a pleasure to listen to as an Audible Original – definitely a wonderful rendition of the story I loved growing up. The Mystery of Alice is another Audible original that had some great twists and turns and was a wonderful mystery, surprisingly set in a middle school. Beneath the Sugar Sky is the next in McGuire’s series and this one came back a bit more to the school for the children who have ended up in other worlds and we visit a rather nonsensical world to help a girl save her mother along with stop the disappearance of her own self. Really enjoyed it! I binged The Selection series so my last novellas were The Queen & The Favorite – I listened to the Queen but ended up reading the ebook of The Favorite since it wasn’t available from the library as an audio. I loved both stories and really enjoyed the series overall.

Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass was so darn good – about a girl who is a good student but ends up getting bullied by Yaqui just cause her boyfriend looked at her once and now she’s dealing with a whole lot of stress and other issues. I really loved it and gave me some insight into high school issues where bullying is taken so much further. Watched was an interesting read as it was about soliciting a Muslim boy to basically spy on his friends and get paid to share information about potential ties to terrorism. Not quite what I was expecting but it was really good!

As for the print books I read – The Coyote Road I have had forever and finally dived into all the stories, the last story was especially heartbreaking because it had dogs in it… and well I have a big soft spot for doggos. Deviate was a thrilling ride and left some more cliffhangers just like the first so I’ll be interested to see where this goes – cyborgs, robots, and deviates – oh my – so much going on but I’m loving every minute of the sci-fi adventure these characters are on.
